Microsoft extends operator billing platform for Windows Phone apps

Microsoft has struck a deal which will make it easier for more Windows Phone users to pay for Marketplace apps via their phone bill. Payments on Microsoft Marketplace are handled by Microsoft's new Commerce Platform, which it has now integrated with the Direct Billing Gateway (DBG) developed by Mach.

The integration makes it easier for mobile carriers to add operator billing, according to Mach. Among the first to profit from the new arrangement will be customers of Canadian operator Telus Communications.

For users, operator billing makes the payment process easier, according to Charles Damen, vice president Mobile Billing and Payments at Mach. They can just click to buy, without having to enter credit card details or store them on the app store servers, Damen said.

Microsoft made its first connection to Mach's gateway in January last year, but, so far, take-up has been slow. Mach says 50 operators use DBG to bill for content downloads and applications, but only two are using it to offer direct billing for Windows Phone users: Telus and Australia's Telstra.

The growing variety of Windows Phones has increased the interest for Microsoft's operating system, according to Damen, who expects more carriers will join Telus and Telstra this year, but isn't willing to announce any details. Mobile carriers have also been upgrading their own systems to be able to handle the billing method, he said.

Operator billing options on Android and Windows Phone allow carriers to be part of app stores, in contrast to Apple's App Store, which completely excludes operators from the application billing process.

Today, operators such as Vodafone, Telenor, Sprint and AT&T offer users the option to pay for apps on their monthly bill. Orange and T-Mobile have also added operator billing for Windows Phone apps using other payment platforms.

Microsoft's Windows Azure Active Directory plans takes shape

This year should be a big one for Microsoft’s Windows Azure Active Directory cloud service, yet another piece of its hybrid public/private cloud puzzle.

In the coming months, Windows users and partners are going to be hearing a lot more about Windows Azure Active Directory, the “conceptual equivalent” of Microsoft’s Active Directory directory service in Windows Server.

I only recently learned about the Windows Azure Active Directory — or WAAD (ugh!) — name via a December post I found on Dominik’s Cloud Security Blog). But the Softies have been dropping hints about plans to step up rights and management policies using Active Directory on the cloud side of the house, too, since last November.

Sessions about WAAD are on the docket for Microsoft’s upcoming TechEd conferences in June. Before that, Microsoft is planning to make some WAAD-related capabilities available to its Windows Azure cloud customers, according to a Microsoft cloud roadmap I saw earlier this year.

Microsoft is expected to tout the synergies of on-premises Active Directory and WAAD across several fronts, according to that roadmap document. Users will be able to maintain secure access to their apps in the cloud using their existing Active Directory set-ups. They’ll be able to migrate apps that depend on Active Directory to the Azure cloud “without making any changes.”

Office 365 enterprise users already can use their on-premises Active Directory to implement single sign-on. As it currently stands, “the administrator, and your users will need to maintain separate user names and passwords for your online and on-premises accounts,” and requires both Active Directory Federation Services (ADFS) 2.0 and the Active Directory sync service. Based on the aforementioned cloud roadmap, it sounds like Microsoft may be adding more Active Directory single sign-on capabilities and features to Office 365 some time this spring.

A Microsoft Web page on WAAD calls WAAD a multi-tenant cloud service. From that page:

“Windows Azure Active Directory is a cloud service that provides identity and access capabilities for applications on Windows Azure and Microsoft Office 365. Windows Azure Active Directory is the multi-tenant cloud service on which Microsoft Office 365 relies on for its identity infrastructure.

“Windows Azure Active Directory utilizes the enterprise-grade quality and proven capabilities of Active Directory, so you can bring your applications to the cloud easily. You can enable single sign-on, security enhanced applications, and simple interoperability with existing Active Directory deployments using Access Control Service (ACS), a feature of Windows Azure Active Directory.”

Microsoft announced last year the availability of ACS 2.0, which added new federation capabilities for Web sites and services. The latest update to the Azure Service Bus includes built-in support for ACS 2.0.

Update: I’m not entirely sure if WAAD is just a new name/new positioning for ACS or if it actually is something more. I’ll try asking Microsoft to see if I can get clarity. If so, I’ll update this post.

In other Microsoft cloud news, Microsoft announced plans to drop SQL Azure pricing (again) this week, effective immediately. The reduced pricing is aimed at customers with databases bigger than 1 GB in size who need to scale. Microsoft also added a new 100 MB database plan to its SQL Azure line-up this week.

New Microsoft Office University product comes with tougher verification rules

Microsoft is replacing its Office Academic SKU with a new Office University one that it hopes will help curtail fraudulent use.

Whenever folks complain about how expensive Microsoft’s Office suite is, someone inevitably points out that the academic version is only about under $100 (usually around $80). And if you’re not a student… no worries. You can use someone else’s ID to buy it.

Microsoft officials know this, too. To help thwart non-students from getting an undeserved deal on the Academic SKU — which includes Word 2010, Excel 2010, PowerPoint 2010, OneNote 2010, Outlook 2010, Publisher 2010, Access 2010, and Office Web Apps (the free, consumer-focused version of Microsoft’s Webified version of four of its Office apps) — Microsoft is tightening the verification requirements.

On February 1, Microsoft quietly replaced the Office Professional Academic 2010 SKU with a new one called “Microsoft Office University 2010.” The new SKU is for “higher-education” students and faculty only. “Microsoft Office Home and Student 2010 is the recommended product for parents and families with K-12 students,” according to a Microsoft frequently asked questions (FAQ) document. (There’s a new comparable Office for Mac 2011 University SKU, too.)

C-FAX 1070 radio “Tech Talk” host Alan Perry is the one who alerted me to the new SKU, which Microsoft confirmed.

Office University 2010 includes the same point products as the former Academic Professional SKU. It costs $99 and can be installed on two PCs. But it has a new verification process, which works as follows, according to the FAQ:

Office University 2010 does not come with a product key. Your eligibility will be verified online before completing purchase. This product will not work without successful verification as you will not have a product key.

You will be required to verify your eligibility online to use this software.
1.Go to www.office.com/verify.
2.Sign in with your Windows Live ID or create one using any email address.
3.Provide your school email address, sign-in ID, or international student identity card (ISIC).

Once you pass verification, the online site displays the product key.

“The big change is the validation process, as you’ll see on the big warning stickers on the packaging,” said Perry. “Up to now, if you could persuade someone to sell you a copy, (even if you weren’t a student or faculty) it was yours to use. The change appears to be an effort to curtail the large number of ineligible people buying the Academic versions.”

Microsoft plans to offer a similar Office University SKU as part of its next versions of Office for Windows and Mac, Perry said the Softies told him.

To begin with- let us first understand the dimensions and weight of this phone; as that happens to be the primary concern of the users of mobile phones. The dimensions of this phone are just 109 x 60 x 14 mm and the weight is a mere 122 gms. The next concern of the potential customers is the display of any mobile phone. The display of this phone comes as a TFT, supported by 65k colours. The size is 2.44 inches and the resolution is 480 x 360 pixels. And, it also comes with a QWERTY keyboard and a Touch-sensitive optical trackpad. The next area of concern happens to be the camera. There is a primary camera, which comes as a 5 MP camera and the features that are associated with it, are- a resolution of 2592x1944 pixels, auto-focus and LED Flash. The other areas of concern happen to be the memory and the battery life. The internal memory comprises of 256 MB storage, 512 MB RAM; whereas the external memory is expandable up to 32 GB, which is possible through a microSD card; and it also comes with a 2 GB card included along with. And, while checking out the battery life; we find that the stand-by time is up to 528 h (2G) / up to 408 h (3G); whereas the talk time is up to 6 h (2G) / up to 6 h (3G).

After checking out the phone; it is required that we check out some economical Blackberry 9780 Deals- so that the users can get the maximum benefit out of them. There are three deals in the market of UK, offered by the leading Network Providers, which are possible due to their tie-ups with Blackberry. These Blackberry 9780 deals are namely, the contract deals, pay as you go deals and SIM free deals. In the contract deals, the users are required to enter in a contract with the Network Provider of their choice. They are provided with a handset and a Network Connection and they are required to pay some pre-decided amount along with the usage charges at frequent intervals.

The only draw-back is that the users are bound by the contract and cannot switch the services of the Network Provider till the end of the contract period. In the pay as you go deals, the users are required to pay some money in advance for the usage balance that they are provided with. This balance can be renewed as and when it gets used up.In the SIM free deals, the users are required to purchase a handset without a SIM. There are no restrictions like the contract deals- and the users are free to switch their Network Provider at any point of time, whenever they feel unsatisfied with the services.

Revenue for the quarter, ended Dec. 31, hit $20.89 billion, up 5 percent compared with 2010's second fiscal quarter, which included recognition of $224 million of deferred revenue related to the Office 2010 technology guarantee program.

Net income came in at $6.62 billion, or $0.78 per share, down from $6.63 billion, or $0.77 per share.

CEO Steve Ballmer called the results "solid" in a statement and predicted that business will accelerate in the new fiscal year starting in July as a result of upcoming product and service launches.

Microsoft missed on the consensus revenue expectation of $20.93 billion from financial analysts polled by Thomson Reuters, but exceeded their earnings per share forecast of $0.76.

The company's Business Division generated $6.28 billion in revenue, up 3 percent year-on-year, and up 7 percent excluding the Office 2010 recognition of deferred revenue. Almost 200 million licenses of Office 2010 have been sold since its launch 18 months ago, the company said. Exchange and SharePoint revenue grew 10 percent, while revenue from Lync and Dynamics CRM grew more than 30 percent.

The Server & Tools business had $4.77 billion in revenue, up 11 percent, and was helped by "double-digit revenue growth" from Windows Server and SQL Server premium editions and by more than 20 percent growth in System Center revenue.

Revenue shrank 6 percent at the Windows & Windows Live Division to $4.74 billion. More than 525 million Windows 7 licenses have been sold since its launch.

The Online Services Division's revenue grew 10 percent to $784 million, while the Entertainment & Devices Division had revenue of $4.24 billion, up 15 percent. There are now about 66 million Xbox 360 consoles in the market, along with 18 million Kinect sensors. Xbox Live memberships increased 33 percent to 40 million.

Looking ahead, Microsoft is revising downward its operating expense guidance to a range of between $28.5 billion and $28.9 billion for the full year ending June 30.

QUESTION 4
You work as a database administrator at Certkingdom.com. Certkingdom.com is using a SQL Server 2008
instance. The SQL Server 2008 instance hosts quite a few applications. ABC also has a server
named ABC-SR43 that is used to store log files.
You have to set up a new job that stores log files on ABC-SR43. You create a new account
ABC\Log_Account. You set it up to be run by the SQL Server Agent Services.
However, your job fails to store any log files on ABC-SR43. After some investigation you notice
that the job does not have permissions to store files on ABC-SR43.
How should you remedy the situation? Select the best option.

A. You should set up ABC\Log_Accoun as a Remote Service account.
B. You should set up ABC\Log_Accoun as a Domain service account.
C. You should set up ABC\Log_Accoun as a Local Service account.
D. You should set up ABC\Log_Accoun as a Local System account.
E. You should set up ABC\Log_Accoun as a Network Service account.
F. You should set up ABC\Log_Account as a Domain account.

Answer: F

Explanation:
The service startup account defines the Microsoft Windows account in which SQL Server Agent
runs and its network permissions. SQL Server Agent runs as a specified user account. For
compatibility with earlier versions of SQL Server, SQL Server Agent can also run as the Local
System account.
In this scenario you should select a Domain account, which allows sufficient permissions and
improved security.

QUESTION 5
You work as a database administrator at Certkingdom.com. Certkingdom.com is using a SQL Server 2008
instance that has a table named ABC_Training. ABC_ Training contains a column named
ABC_Distance. A new Certkingdom.com training policy states that the training (ie. The ABC_Distance
column in the ABC_Training table) cannot be increased or decreased by more than 3%.
How should you implement the ABC Training Policy?

A. You should consider developing a view which rolls back non-compliant Certkingdom.com policy
changes to ABC_Distance.
B. You should consider developing a stored procedure which rolls back non-compliant Certkingdom.com
policy compliant changes to the ABC_Distance column.
C. You should consider developing a primary key constraint to the ABC_training table which only
contains valid values on ABC_Distance.
D. You should consider developing a create trigger which rolls back non-compliant Certkingdom.com
policy changes to the ABC_Distance column.
E. You should consider developing an update trigger which rolls back non-compliant Certkingdom.com
policy changes to the ABC_Distance column.
F. You should consider developing a delete trigger which rolls back non-compliant Certkingdom.com policy
changes to the ABC_Distance column.

Answer: E

Explanation:

QUESTION 6
You work as a database administrator at Certkingdom.com. Certkingdom.com is using a SQL Server 2008
instance that contains a database named ABC_DB. Certkingdom.com contains a lot of customer data
which is processed by the Web application. You need to keep the customer information safe since
it is confidential. This information includes files of data, backups, and log files.
How can this be achieved and still keep the performance and functionality of the web application?
Select one or two.

A. You should consider adding a transaction Log on ABC_DB, and set the information to be
encrypted for a fixed time.
B. Use BitLocker Drive Encryption on the hard drives on the SQL Server.
C. Use EFS (Encrypting File System) on the hard drives on the SQL Server.
D. You should consider enabling the Transparent Database Encryption on ABC_DB and back up
the transaction log.
E. You should consider enabling the Transparent Database Encryption on ABC_DB and enabling
the Transparent Database Encryption on master database.
F. Use cell-level encryption for the specific data that needs to be kept safe.

Answer: D

Explanation:
With the introduction of transparent data encryption (TDE) in SQL Server 2008, users now have
the choice between cell-level encryption as in SQL Server 2005, full database-level encryption by
using TDE, or the file-level encryption options provided by Windows. TDE is the optimal choice for
bulk encryption to meet regulatory compliance or corporate data security standards. TDE works at
the file level, which is similar to two Windows® features: the Encrypting File System (EFS) and
BitLocker™ Drive Encryption, the new volume-level encryption introduced in Windows Vista®,
both of which also encrypt data on the hard drive. TDE does not replace cell-level encryption,
EFS, or BitLocker.

QUESTION 7
You work as a database administrator at Certkingdom.com. Certkingdom.com is using two SQL Server 2008
sample named ABCSmp1 and ABCSmp2. Furthermore, ABCSmp1 contains a database named
ABC_DB. A Certkingdom.com user named Mia Hamm uses her logon MiaHamm to log on to the database
on ABCSmp1. During the week you have transferred ABC_DB to ABCSmp2. You manually
recreate the Mia Hamm login on ABCSmp2. However, when she tries to login on ABC_DB at
ABCSmp2, she received an error message stating that she is not allowed access. Mia Hamm
needs to access ABC_DB and you need to make it happen.
What T-SQL code should you use? (Each correct option is part of the answer. Choose TWO)

A. Use Certkingdom.com;
B. Use ABC_DB; *
C. Use ABCSmp1;
D. Use ABCSmp2;

F. CHANGE LOGIN MiaHamm WITH DEFAULT_DATABASE = ABC_DB;
G. ALTER LOGIN MiaHamm WITH PASSWORD = 'pwd1234' UNLOCK;
H. CHANGE LOGIN MiaHamm WITH PASSWORD = 'pwd1234' UNLOCK;
I. CHANGE USER MiaHamm WITH LOGIN = MiaHamm;
J. ALTER USER MiaHamm WITH LOGIN = MiaHamm; *
K. ALTER LOGIN MiaHamm ENABLE;
L. CHANGE LOGIN MiaHamm ENABLE;

Answer: B,J

QUESTION 8
You work as a database administrator at Certkingdom.com. Certkingdom.com is using a SQL Server 2008 instance.
Your junior assistant is curious about on how to move a table, such as ABC_table, from its current
scheme (scheme1) to another scheme (scheme2)
How can you accomplish this in T-SQL?

A. You should consider using the following:
ALTER TABLE Schema1.ABC_Table SWITCH TO Schema2.ABC_table;

B. You should consider using the following:
ALTER AUTHORIZATION ON Schema1.ABC_Table TO Schema2;

C. You should consider using the following:
ALTER SCHEMA schema2 TRANSFER schema1.ABC_table;

D. You should consider using the following:
ALTER SCHEMA schema1 TRANSFER schema2.ABC_table;

E. You should consider using the following:
ALTER USER Schema1 WITH DEFAULT_SCHEMA = Schema2;

F. You should consider using the following:
MOVE ABC_Table FROM SCHEMA schema1 TO schema2

G. You should consider using the following:
MOVE ABC_Table FROM schema1 TO schema2

Answer: C

Explanation:
ALTER SCHEMA can only be used to move securables between schemas in the same database.
To change or drop a securable within a schema, use the ALTER or DROP statement specific to
that securable.

QUESTION 9
You work as a database administrator at Certkingdom.com. Certkingdom.com is using a SQL Server 2008
instance. You have received instructions from management to allow the users at Certkingdom.com on the
SQL Server sample to use the OPENROWSET() function to search remote information sources.
You study incomplete code in the exhibit carefully. (Line numbers are used for reference purposes only)
Exhibit:
01. sp_configure 'show advanced options', 1
02. RECONFIGURE
03.
04. RECONFIGURE
05. GO
06.
07. SELECT a.*
08. FROM OPENROWSET('SQLNCLI', 'Server=Madrid;Trusted_Connection=yes;',
09. 'SELECT GroupName, Name, DepartmentID
10. FROM AdventureWorks.HumanResources.Department
11. ORDER BY GroupName, Name') AS a;
12. GO
Which T-SQL statement should you insert at line 03 to make the batch meet the requirement in
this scenario?

A. sp_configure 'Router control', 1
B. sp_configure 'Router control', 0
C. sp_configure 'Transaction Logs', 1
D. sp_configure 'Transaction Logs', 0
E. sp_configure 'Ad Lib Distributed Queries ', 1
F. sp_configure 'Ad Lib Distributed Queries ', 0
G. sp_configure 'Ad Hoc Distributed Queries', 1
H. sp_configure 'Ad Hoc Distributed Queries', 0

Answer: G

Explanation:
By default, SQL Server does not allow ad hoc distributed queries using OPENROWSET and
OPENDATASOURCE. When this option is set to 1, SQL Server allows ad hoc access. When this
option is not set or is set to 0, SQL Server does not allow ad hoc access.
Ad hoc distributed queries use the OPENROWSET and OPENDATASOURCE functions to
connect to remote data sources that use OLE DB. OPENROWSET and OPENDATASOURCE
should be used only to reference OLE DB data sources that are accessed infrequently. For any
data sources that will be accessed more than several times, define a linked server.

Low RAM
The first and foremost thing about the performance is hardware configuration. Make sure to have an adequate amount of RAM in the computer. If it seems low then you can also think to upgrade it. The minimum required RAM to install Windows 7 is 1GB but it is recommended to have 3GB RAM for optimal performance. If you working as a photographic professional or facing slow computer problem then have a look at this option too. You can consult an expert at Windows 7 Tech Support to know the minimum amount of RAM required as per your configuration and requirements.

Limiting the startup
Almost each application is designed to load at startup with the Windows automatically in order to have maximum use and fast launch. However, this option lets the Windows to start the computer slowly. The bottom right corner of your screen nearby the clock is the system tray. Here, all the programs loading on startup will appear. You can also click the arrow icon to see the hidden programs.

One can use Microsoft Startup System Configuration utility or Autoruns to block the programs from loading on startup. Blocking unnecessary applications can decrease the startup time but selecting the system default utilities can stop the proper functioning of associated programs. Therefore, it is recommended to have expert assistance for limiting the startup.

Cleaning up the junk
Use Disk Cleanup to remove the unwanted, temporary, and system-generated junk files from your computer. This will also let you to remove the unnecessary old system log and empty the Recycle Bin. Removing these files helps your processor to work faster and focus only the work related files.

Performance Troubleshooter
Go to Start menu and click Control Panel. Type ‘troubleshooter’ in the search box, click ‘Troubleshooting’ in ‘System & Security’. Now, select ‘Check for performance issues’. This will open the Performance Troubleshooter Wizard. Follow it step by step to analyze the performance issues. If you’re not able to understand or resolve the problem then it is the time to buzz Windows 7 tech support.

Virtual Memory
As the name suggests, it is the virtual memory assigned on the primary or secondary disk drives for the system work. Windows recognizes this area as primary memory. It is recommended to assign 1.5 times of the RAM as minimum and 2 times as maximum amount of virtual memory. By default, it is selected to be assigned automatically by Windows. Set the virtual memory properly from 1.5 to 2 times of RAM and see a difference between in the computer performance after a restart.

Galloping Advances in Technology

The world around us is always evolving. If we were to turn the clock back a hundred years we probably wouldn't even recognize our own town. We certainly wouldn't know how to live without computers, cell phones or iPods. It seems unthinkable to have to wait thirty days to get a letter to be able to talk to a friend or relative. Nowadays we can log on to our computers and write out an email that takes only seconds to get to the person we are sending it to.

As little as 20 years ago technology was oceans apart of where it is today. The last two decades have given rise to astonishing advancements in the technologies we all know and love today. Not too long ago we had cassette players, now we have CDs which have turned into mp3 players. Televisions that were once considered big screen at 28” and weighed in at 50+ pounds are now pushing 60”, weigh less than 30 pounds and are flat screen HDTV's to boot. It is not too difficult to look around and see the rampant technological advances everywhere.

We often think of technological advancement in terms of all the electronics that are around us to entertain and educate us. But there have also been huge advancements in medicine in the last couple of decades. Scientists are learning new things about diseases and searching for treatments every day. Scientists with funding from both private and public sources have made tremendous advances in the health care field.

We know far more about infectious diseases such as AIDS and more about diseases of the central nervous system such as ADHD and Alzheimer's disease. There are still diseases in the world where medical knowledge is severely limited even more where no cure has been found. There are so many different types of diseases, infections and abnormalities affecting people around the world, it is very probable that we will never know all there is to know about what they are and how to treat them. We do know, though, that science is always evolving and someday, medicine will catch up to many of these unknown and/or untreatable afflictions.

For those diagnosed with cancer, AIDS or Alzheimer's disease it is certainly important that we continue researching and working to improve medicine and searching for cures. Every year millions of Americans die suffering from infections or diseases, many well before they should have. That means that families across the United States suffer the loss of relatives or loved ones because there wasn't a sufficient cure for their diagnosis.

Of course companies like Apple and Sony are pouring huge sums of money annually into research and development of newer and newer technology so they can claim to be the one with the cutting edge gadgets that everybody must have. Smart phones and HDTV are evolving every single day into faster, easier lean machines. It is a wonderful time we live in when the technology exists enabling us to send emails from our phones and make sure our home security devices are on and the coffee pot is off, all from a single pocket size gizmo. With all this sophisticated wireless stuff, you would think the scientists could come up with a successful treatment for diseases such as Alzheimer's disease.

Many times big name stores will periodically ask their customers when they check out, if they would like to donate a dollar to cancer research or towards the search for a cure for Alzheimer's disease. Frequently customers answer no or not today, but next time we are asked, if we could all donate a dollar, then perhaps we could make as many advances medically as we have with our electronic gadgets and toys.

AMD moves away from Intel rivalry, rethinks course

After years of going up against Intel and not fairing so well, Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) is no longer going to focus on its long-standing rival.

While AMD says isn't giving up on the x86 market, it's not going to move forward with Intel in its sights.

Analysts say it's about time that AMD breaks free from being seen as forever the bridesmaid.

"We're at an inflection point," AMD spokesman Michael Silverman said in an interview with the San Jose Mercury News. "We will all need to let go of the old 'AMD versus Intel' mind-set, because it won't be about that anymore."

In an email to Computerworld, Silverman wrote that the company is rethinking its course.

"Any time a company is more focused on its competitor than what the market wants and needs, it is probably not in a good place for long-term growth" wrote Silverman. "Our CEO Rory Read is driving a shift internally to think beyond the typical and outdated AMD/Intel mindset.

"At the end of the day, we aren't focused on keeping pace with Intel, we are focused on keeping pace with consumers and the market," he said. "That is how we are going to win."

Silverman said AMD executives will offer information on restructuring plans during the company's scheduled Financial Analyst Day on Feb. 2. AMD first talked of restructuring early in November when it announced it was laying off 1,400 workers, or 10% of its workforce.

With Read now leading the company, it's no surprise that AMD is looking at changes in its focus, said Charles King, principal analyst with Pund-IT Inc.

"This smells like the company's new CEO understands that following the old line will more or less permanently lock AMD into an also-ran position against Intel," said King. "In the end, I believe it's evidence of the company hoping and trying to be break-out and be judged on its own terms."

He also noted that the company's competition with Intel has largely defined AMD -- something the company needs to change.

"In the desktop/laptop space, they've mostly been considered the lower priced spread to Intel's sweet creamery butter," said King. "At this point, the best way to change the game may be to shift the rules. It isn't the easiest path, but it's a reasonable strategy given the circumstances."

However, breaking free of that rivalry may be harder than just saying it's over.

"AMD and Intel are still rivals and will remain rivals, despite what AMD is saying right now," said Dan Olds, an analyst with The Gabriel Consulting Group. "The difference is that AMD seems to be publicly bowing to the reality that AMD will likely never beat Intel in the traditional processor market."

And AMD isn't even really on Intel's radar these days, according to Jim McGregor, an analyst with In-Stat.

"Unfortunately, it really doesn't matter right now because Intel is focused on ARM," he added. "AMD really doesn't matter to Intel at this point in time."

McGregor, though, said AMD has long needed to focus on its own brand and destiny. "AMD is facing some serious challenges in manufacturing, product positioning and now organizational structure," he added. "So, this is going to be a challenging period for the company."

The biggest concern facing AMD could be ARM-fueled systems, something the company needs to handle head-on, according to Olds.

"They need to look at ways to combine their assets, like CPUs and graphics technology, to address markets that range from tablets to enterprise servers," he added. "They also need to think outside the box and not be tied to the past. They should be exploring ARM chips and looking for ways where they can couple low-power, low-cost chips with their graphics processors to build better consumer and enterprise computing platforms."

UK Cisco CCNA Training

If your search is for Cisco training and you haven’t worked with routers before, what you need is the CCNA. This training course was created to teach students with a commercial knowledge of routers. Big organisations who have various regional departments need routers to connect their networks in different buildings to allow their networks to keep in touch. The Internet also is based on huge numbers of routers.

It’s vital that you already know a good deal about the operation and function of computer networks, as networks are connected to routers. Otherwise, you’ll probably struggle. Better to find a course teaching basic networking skills (for example Network+, perhaps with A+) before getting going with CCNA. Some companies will design a bespoke package for you.

The CCNA qualification is all you need at this stage – don’t be cajoled into attempting your CCNP for now. Once you’ve worked for a few years you will have a feel for if this next level is for you. If so, you’ll have a much better chance of succeeding – as your working knowledge will put everything into perspective.

Accredited exam simulation and preparation software is a must – and absolutely ought to be sought from your course provider.

Steer clear of depending on non-accredited preparation materials for exams. The way they’re phrased can be completely unlike authorised versions – and often this creates real issues when it comes to taking the real exam.

Practice exams are invaluable for confidence building – so much so, that at the real thing, you don’t get phased.

Many people don’t comprehend what information technology is all about. It’s stimulating, innovative, and means you’re a part of the huge progress of technology affecting everyones lives in the 21st century.

There are people who believe that the technological revolution we have experienced is easing off. This couldn’t be more wrong. We have yet to experience incredible advances, and the internet particularly will be the most effective tool in our lives.

And keep in mind that income in IT over Britain as a whole is much better than the national average salary, therefore you will be in a good position to gain considerably more once qualified in IT, than you’d get in most other industries.

With the IT marketplace emerging year on year, it’s looking good that the search for certified IT specialists will remain buoyant for the significant future.

A useful feature that many training companies provide is a programme of Job Placement assistance. The service is put in place to assist your search for your first position. Because of the massive need for more IT skills in Britain right now, it’s not too important to place too much emphasis on this feature however. It’s not as difficult as you may be led to believe to find the right work as long as you’ve got the necessary skills and qualifications.

One important thing though, avoid waiting until you’ve finished your training before updating your CV. As soon as your training commences, enter details of your study programme and place it on jobsites!

You’ll often find that you’ll land your initial job while you’re still a student (occasionally right at the beginning). If your course details aren’t on your CV (and it hasn’t been posted on jobsites) then you aren’t even in the running!

Generally, a specialist independent regional recruitment consultant or service (who will get paid by the employer when they’ve placed you) is going to give you a better service than a sector of a centralised training facility. Also of course they should know the local industry and employment needs.

A good number of trainees, so it seems, invest a great deal of time on their training course (for years sometimes), and then just stop instead of trying to get a job. Introduce yourself… Make an effort to let employers know about you. Don’t think a job’s just going to jump out in front of you.

You’ll come across courses which guarantee examination passes – inevitably that means paying for the exams before you’ve even made a start on the course. Before you get carried away with guaranteed exams, look at the following:

Of course it isn’t free – you’re still being charged for it – it’s just been wrapped up in the price of the package.

Qualifying on the first ‘go’ is what everyone wants to do. Going for exams one by one and paying as you go has a marked effect on pass-rates – you take it seriously and are mindful of the investment you’ve made.

Isn’t it outrageous to have to pay the training company at the start of the course for examinations? Hold on to your money and pay for the exam at the time, instead of paying any mark-up – and take it closer to home – rather than in some remote place.

Big margins are made by a number of companies that get money upfront for exam fees. A number of students don’t take them for various reasons but the company keeps the money. Believe it or not, there are companies around that rely on that fact – as that’s how they make a lot of their profit.

Additionally, you should consider what an ‘exam guarantee’ really means. Many training companies won’t be prepared to pay for re-takes until you can prove to them you’re ready to pass.

Exams taken at VUE and Prometric centres are approximately 112 pounds in Great Britain. Students should be very wary of forking out hundreds of pounds extra in fees for ‘exam guarantees’ (most often hidden in the package) – when a quality course, support and consistent and systematic learning, coupled with quality exam simulation software is what will really see you through.

Windows 7 users who download Microsoft's newest browser, then "pin" any of seven different websites to their taskbars, receive offers that range from a free month of Hulu Plus to a $5-off Fandango movie ticket.

Some of the offers are available immediately, while others launch later this month and during December.

When people running alternate browsers such as Google's Chrome or Mozilla's Firefox on Windows 7 visit the promotional site, they see the message, "Where's the love? ... Upgrade to Internet Explorer to pin these sites and get the free stuff."

Pinning, introduced in IE9, lets users add website shortcuts to the Windows 7 task bar for the same kind of easy access as locally-stored programs.

Users running Mac OS X who visit the free offers site see a different message: "Oh Nooooooo... You're using Mac OS which doesn't support Internet Explorer 9 and Site Pinning."

Windows XP users -- still the most widely-used version of Microsoft's operating system -- cannot upgrade to IE9. Microsoft has defended that ban even as IE's share has continued falling, calling the decade-old OS the "lowest common denominator" and not worthy of future browser development.

Microsoft has been aggressively pushing IE9 as the best browser for Windows 7, and has regularly touted that edition's gains in usage share even as other versions lose ground to Chrome and Apple's Safari.

According to Web metrics company Net Applications, IE9 accounted for 22.5% of the browsers running worldwide on Windows 7 during October, an increase of 1.4 percentage points from the month before. Only Microsoft's own IE8 sported a higher share.

Last month, IE overall lost the largest amount of usage share in three years, falling to 52.6%, putting Microsoft's browser in danger of slipping under the 50% mark as early as January 2012.

HTC reports record numbers, sells more smartphones than RIM

After reporting sales of 13.2 million smartphones during the third quarter, HTC is now the fourth largest smartphone vendor after having outpaced Research In Motion, according to market research company Canalys.

A diverse product offering, expanded distribution network and growing global brand recognition resulted in HTC's highest-ever quarterly revenue at $4.5 billion for the period ending Sept. 30. That is a 79 percent improvement year-on-year, the company said in a statement on Monday.

At 13.2 million smartphones, shipments increased by 93 percent year-on-year. For example, in China HTC sold nine times as many phones during the third quarter this year compared to the same period last year. That has helped turn HTC into the fourth largest smartphone vendor, passing RIM by a margin of 1.4 million units in the process, according to Canalys. "It has seen a lot of success in the Asia-Pacific region, and it is doing very, very well in the U.S. market," said Pete Cunningham, analyst at Canalys.

The company is also closer than ever to Apple and Nokia, which sold 17.07 million and 16.8 million smartphones, respectively. "It is going to be very competitive. Nokia is probably the vendor that is the most vulnerable from HTC in the short term. Nokia's Symbian volumes will tail off, and its success depends on how fast it can ramp up Windows Phone sales," said Cunningham.

Good products combined with a lot of support from operators have helped HTC increase its shipments volume, according to Cunningham. When an operator wants an Android-based phone, HTC and Samsung, which is the biggest smartphone vendor, are the first port of calls, he said.

To further expand volume, HTC is opening a factory in the beginning of next year, which will help increase the company's total manufacturing capacity to about 40 million phones per year.

Two areas in which the company is currently investing are LTE (Long Term Evolution) technology and entry-level smartphones. An LTE device upgrade cycle will come in 2012 in the U.S. and some advanced markets in Asia, and HTC hopes to take advantage of that. At the same time, it aims to continue to attract first-time smartphone buyers, it said.

"In the long term, we will have a very healthy market in terms of competition and that drives innovation, which is great for end users," said Cunningham.

How Android swallowed the UK smartphone market in 18 months

In just 18 months, Android has come from nowhere to become the mobile OS powering just under half of every smartphone sold in the UK – and the half the people owning a mobile phone in the UK have a smartphone.

In the process it has bested Nokia's Symbian (since declared dead, though still stumbling to its grave), RIM's BlackBerry OS (which is fighting back) and Apple's iPhone (which, given its comparatively high price until the latest cuts to the iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4, was never likely to dominate long-term).

It's an amazing run for Android which is likely to carry on into 2012, since it's taken four years to reach this point (longer if you count Nokia's, RIM's and Microsoft's offerings from 2005/6 as smartphones) but the number of smartphones being sold is accelerating.

What these figures don't show you is that the entire market is growing; Kantar ComTech WorldPanel, which provides the statistics, declined to give absolute sales figures (they want to have something to tempt clients to buy the full reports). A minor note: these figures go up to 2 October, just before the iPhone 4S launch; expect that Apple's share will recover slightly. Even so, Android is just going to keep growing.

It's very likely that in the next two years you'll see smartphones reach something like 90% penetration in the UK - if only because fewer shops and carriers will be selling feature phones, for two reasons: (a) they make less money selling them in the first place (b) carriers get less money from phones that don't have data plans.

Android is almost certain to sweep the board here: it could hit up to 70% market share in one or two years (remember, market share is "share of handsets being sold", not "share of handsets in peoples' hands"). That's because Android handsets from cheaper manufacturers such as China's Huawei and ZTE will come in at the bottom of the market (it's noticeable how the "Other" segment has fallen to zero in the past year). Pretty soon you're going to be able to get a smartphone for almost nothing in your local supermarket. And you can already get really cheap PAYG data options from Three or GiffGaff.

For the record, I think it's great that smartphones are becoming pervasive. Putting the internet in everyone's hands, wherever they are? (If only the mobile carriers would stopholding up the 4G auction.) That's got to be a really good thing.

Does it matter, though, whether the pervasive OS is Android, or what share this or that OS has, beyond the willy-waving horse race that some people love to indulge in? Here's Henry Blodget over at BusinessInsider, who slams on the CAPS LOCK to pronounce ATTENTION APPLE FANS: Samsung Blowing Past Apple To Become The Biggest Smartphone Vendor Is Not Good News". (By which he means not good news for Apple. Though by implication, it would also be Not Good News for RIM and Nokia either.) Blodget's take: As the history of the tech industry has demonstrated again and again, technology platform markets tend to standardize around a single dominant platform. Although several different platforms can co-exist while a market is developing, eventually a clear leader emerges. And as it does, the leader's power and "network effects" grow, while the leverage of the smaller platforms diminishes.

In the case of Android, this growing power will not lead to enormous profits for Google, because, right now anyway, Google is not selling Android. (Instead, Google is building a "moat" around its wildly profitable search business and making it easier for people to use Google search from their phones. This may change when Google acquires Motorola and starts selling integrated handsets itself.) But the better Android phones get, and the more market share Android gains, the more Android's network effects will increase, and the more Apple's leverage over the iPhone ecosystem will diminish. And that can only be bad news for Apple's ability to continue to command exploding profits from iPhones, app developers, musicians, media companies, and others who now must pay it big distribution fees because they have no other choice.Similarly, the bigger other global handset manufacturers get relative to Apple, the less (relative) leverage Apple will have over partners in the global parts-and-manufacturing supply chains.

There's three things there. Let's take the last one first: supply chains. Apple didn't do badly in 2007 when it was an entrant to the mobile phone supply chain, and it's got enough money in the bank that it can guarantee supplies any time it likes. (That's what it uses its cash reserves outside the US to do: buy up future outputs from various factories.) Most smartphone manufacturers don't have much scale; that's unlikely to change. Samsung is likely to get bigger (though it would be helpful if it would be more forthcoming about how many phones and how many tablets it has pushed out the door). That won't stop Apple making phones, though. And by proxy, it won't stop RIM or Nokia making phones - Nokia is still the world's largest in handset volume. Only mismanagement can mess that up.

Now to the first point, about "the history of the tech industry". Actually, the history of the tech industry is a wide and varied thing, which doesn't show any clear lessons about dominant platforms. Yes, you do get dominant platforms, but that doesn't prevent other players existing within niches and making good money from it. Cite 1: Apple, making nice money, thanks, from the PC market. Cite 2: Microsoft, making nice money, thanks, from the server OS market, despite Linux being the most-used. The leverage of Apple and Microsoft in those respective spaces is helped by the existence of standards, and it's those - plus the internet - which make the "platform" idea less powerful on smartphones.

Think of it like this: if the PC market had started when the internet was already pervasive, then operating systems would have had to have internet standards built in; that would have forced more interoperability. It was the threat that Netscape might force interoperability on all computing platforms that scared the bejeezus out of Microsoft in the 1990s. So smartphones, which are arriving when the internet is pervasive, will live by different standards.

Horace Dediu, who runs the consultancy Asymco, puts it like this: imagine a world where 5 billion people have a smartphone. In that case, a 10% share translates to 500 million users. Even a 1% share is 50 million. If you couldn't make a profit from 50 million users, you probably shouldn't be in the business at all.

And just a side note on that "wildly profitable" Google search from their phones. All the web stats, and Google's own stats, indicate that - for now anyway - about two-thirds or more of mobile web browsing and searching is mostly done by iOS users (iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad). In some places it's much higher. Now, past performance is not necessarily a guide to the future (you only have to look at the graph to see that). But you have to ask too: what exactly is the "network effect" that Blodget thinks Google will get from Android? People writing apps? They already do; but it hasn't dented the bigger platforms.

The interesting challenge will be for Nokia and RIM, which have to establish themselves at the higher end of the market as everything shifts to smartphones. But in a growing market, the only problem is how to supply enough people. Android's a whopping success. But that doesn't shut anyone out - yet.

What you need to know about Windows 8 app compatibility

Hidden in the ballyhoo of the Windows 8 developer rollout is a gem of a document with the unlikely name of Windows and Windows Server Developer Preview Compatibility Cookbook. If you're starting to get spooked about "legacy" app compatibility with Windows 8, it's a good place to start.

(It still sends a shudder up my spine when I call Windows 7 apps "legacy.")

Microsoft distributed a similar document for Windows 7 called the Application Quality Cookbook. Like the earlier tome, this one's intended to help applications people figure out what will or won't work with the new version of Windows -- and points in the right direction to identify, if not rectify, many common problems.

Some of the highlights:

If your apps check for a Windows version number, they're probably going to choke. Windows 8 is identified internally (by GetVersion and GetVersionEx) as version 6.2. Go figure.
.Net Framework 4.5 is the default (apparently it's built into the Win8 Runtime, WinRT), but .Net Framework 3.5 can be automatically loaded, with user approval, from the Windows Update site. Some day, performing an upgrade from Windows 7 to Windows 8 Developer Preview -- the direct upgrade is not currently supported -- is supposed to bring along a copy of .Net Framework 3.5. The .Net Framework 3.5 runtime files are on the Developer Preview DVD.
There's a lengthy discussion of the changes made to accommodate new "advanced format" disks, with large sector sizes (up from 512 bytes to 4KB). The changes apply to all Windows systems with AF disks, under Vista, Windows 7, or Windows 8 Developer Preview. The paper also discusses application handling of Thin Provisioning LUNs for storage arrays, and the gradual elimination of the DiskPart and DiskRAID utilities in favor of the Windows Storage Management API and the PowerShell utility.
Windows Explorer 7's Previous Versions feature is disappearing, as well as the application hooks for it. Windows 7 Backup and Restore are similarly being deprecated, in favor of the new Windows 8 File History feature.
For new applications, there are much more stringent requirements for testing kernel mode drivers.
You can find volumes of warnings about creating autostarting programs and admonitions -- with code samples -- to turn periodic background checks into official Automatic Maintenance tasks.
Finally, the Compatibility Cookbook runs through new APIs for SSDs, including TRIM commands, and USB 3.0.

If you're worried that your current applications aren't going to run in Windows 8 or if you're thinking about creating applications that take advantage of the new Windows 8 capabilities, this 70-page doc is well worth a gander.

Microsoft, Red Hat spar over secure boot-loading tech

Is Microsoft using a next-generation computing boot-loading technology to lock out the use of Linux and other OSEs on certain computers? While Microsoft has denied malicious intent, one Red Hat developer maintains that this may be the case.

Microsoft is mandating the use of the UEFI (Unified Extensible Firmware Interface) secure boot-loading capability with Windows 8 in such a way that "the end user is no longer in control of their PC," charged Red Hat developer Matthew Garrett in a blog entry posted Friday.

Microsoft has claimed that this charge is based on a misunderstanding of the company's intentions. "At the end of the day, the customer is in control of their PC," said Microsoft program manager Tony Mangefeste in another blog posting from Microsoft.

The controversy took root on Tuesday, when Garrett pointed out in a blog posting that Microsoft-certified computers running Windows 8 may not be able to be loaded with copies of other OSes, such as Linux. Users could not install Linux as a second OS, or replace Windows with a copy of Linux, Garrett argued.

Windows 8 will require its host computer to use the UEFI, the low-level interface between the computer firmware and the OS. Marketed as a replacement to BIOS, UEFI provides a secure boot protocol, which requires the OS to furnish a digital key in order to be loaded by the machine. UEFI then can block the operations of any programs or drivers unless they have been signed by this key, a move that should prevent malware from infecting machines by changing the boot-loading process.

With Windows 8, Microsoft will require hardware manufacturers (those wishing to display the Windows logo on their units) to ship their machines with secure boot enabled. Each machine would then require a digital key from Microsoft, the hardware manufacturer or, if it uses another OS, a secure key for that OS.

Users who customize their own versions of Linux, or use a generic OS that does not come with a key, may not be able to run these OSes on machines requiring this secure booting process, Garrett said. Nor would there be any guarantee that OEMs (original equipment manufacturers) even provide the ability for users to add their own keys, or give users the option to run other OSes without a key.

Garrett's blog post subsequently sparked debate in the trade press and Linux user communities.

Responding to the controversy on Thursday, Microsoft has denied that the intent was to shut out Linux. Although he did not mention Linux by name, Steven Sinofsky, president of the Windows and Windows Live Division, noted in a blog post that some of those commenting have used details of the new plan to "synthesize scenarios that are not the case."

The rest of the posting, authored by Mangefeste, noted that Microsoft is concerned only that Windows 8 be protected in a secure boot loader, and that OEMs are free to build in the option of disabling secure boot for running OSes without keys. Other OS providers are responsible for providing their own keys.

"For the enthusiast who wants to run older operating systems, the option is there to allow you to make that decision," Mangefeste wrote. "However, [disabling secure boot] comes at your own risk," he added.

"Microsoft's rebuttal is entirely factually accurate. But it's also misleading," Garrett responded in a follow-up blog item, posted Friday. Under the licensing agreement, the equipment manufacturer is under no obligation to provide users with the ability to disable the secure boot capability. Beyond the use of third-party OSes, this approach might also hamper the ability of users to upgrade components such as graphics cards, because there is no requirement to provide the user with the capability of installing additional keys.

"The truth is that UEFI secure boot is a valuable and worthwhile feature that Microsoft are misusing to gain tighter control over the market," Garrett charged.

Microsoft scales up CRM to thwart Salesforce.com, Oracle

Microsoft announced the availability Wednesday of Dynamics CRM 2011, the on-premises and partner-hosted version of its CRM (customer relationship management) software.

The new release can scale up to 150,000 concurrent users in a single instance while maintaining fast response times, "once again raising the bar for performance and scalability in the CRM industry," Microsoft said in a statement.

While vendor boasts about product performance are a staple of many product announcements, Microsoft's decision to highlight the benchmark shows it wants to win deals in the largest enterprises at the expense of competitors like Salesforce.com and Oracle CRM on Demand, both of which are delivered as SaaS (software as a service).

Microsoft has a SaaS product as well, CRM Online, which is based on the same code as CRM 2011, and released the latest version last month. But Microsoft and its partners can tout the scalability of the on-premises version when competing for business with customers that may be on the fence regarding SaaS.

To one observer, however, usability, not scalability, is the main selling point for Microsoft's latest CRM products.

"All vendors today have the ability to support huge user bases with very fast response times," said Denis Pombriant, managing principal of Beagle Research, via e-mail. QUESTION 2
You work as an enterprise administrator at Certkingdom.com. The Certkingdom.com network has a domain named
Certkingdom.com with a single site named Site
A. All servers in the Certkingdom.com network run Windows Server
2008.
You reorganize the Active Directory infrastructure to include a second site named SiteB with its
own domain controller.
How would you configured the firewall to allow replication between SiteA and SiteB?

A. Enable IPSec traffic to pass through the firewall.
B. Enable RPC traffic to pass through the firewall.
C. Enable SMTP traffic to pass through the firewall.
D. Enable NNTP traffic to pass through the firewall.
E. Enable FTP traffic to pass through the firewall.

Answer: B

Explanation:
You should permit RPC traffic through the firewall to enable the domain controllers to replicate
between the two sites because the Active Directory relies on remote procedure call (RPC) for
replication between domain controllers. You can open the firewall wide to permit RPC's native
dynamic behavior.

QUESTION 3
You work as an enterprise administrator at Certkingdom.com. The Certkingdom.com network has a domain named
Certkingdom.com. All servers in the Certkingdom.com network run Windows Server 2008.
Certkingdom.com runs a critical application that accesses data that is stored in a Microsoft SQL Server
2005 database server named ABC-DB02. Which of the following options would you choose to
ensure that the database is always available?

A. Two Windows Server 2008 servers running MS SQL Server 2005 Standard Edition in a
Network Load Balancing (NLB) cluster.
B. Two Windows Server 2008 servers running MS SQL Server 2005 Enterprise Edition in a
Network Load Balancing (NLB) cluster
C. Two Windows Server 2008 servers running MS SQL Server 2005 Standard Edition in a failover
cluster.
D. Two Windows Server 2008 servers running MS SQL Server 2005 Enterprise Edition in a
failover cluster.

Answer: D

Explanation:
To ensure the high availability of the data store, you need to use a Windows Server 2008 failover
cluster with shared storage.
Failover clustering can help you build redundancy into your network and eliminate single points of
failure.
Administrators have better control and can achieve better performance with storage than was
possible in previous releases. Failover clusters now support GUID partition table (GPT) disks that
can have capacities of larger than 2 terabytes, for increased disk size and robustness.
Administrators can now modify resource dependencies while resources are online, which means
they can make an additional disk available without interrupting access to the application that will
use it. And administrators can run tools in Maintenance Mode to check, fix, back up, or restore
disks more easily and with less disruption to the cluster
You should not use Network Load Balancing (NLB) because it only allows you to distribute TCP/IP
requests to multiple systems in order to optimize resource utilization, decrease computing time,
and ensure system availability.

QUESTION 4
You work as an enterprise administrator at Certkingdom.com. The Certkingdom.com network has a domain named
Certkingdom.com. All servers in the Certkingdom.com network run Windows Server 2008. Certkingdom.com has its
headquarters in Chicago and sub-divisions in Boston, Atlanta, Miami and Dallas. All domain
controllers are currently installed in the Chicago.
You need to have new domain controllers installed in the Boston, Atlanta, Miami and Dallas subdivisions.
Certkingdom.com issues a security policy for the new domain controllers that states the
following:
• Unauthorized user must not be able to access the Active Directory database.
• Unauthorized user must not be able to boot a domain controller from an alternate boot disk.
Which of the following options would you choose to implement the security policy?

A. Modify the permissions of the ntds.dat file.
B. Configure a read-only domain controller (RODC) in the Boston, Atlanta, Miami and Dallas.
C. Disable replication of the Sysvol folder on the new domain controllers.
D. Configure Windows BitLocker Drive Encryption (BitLocker) on the new domain controllers.
E. Disable the Global Catalog role on the new domain controllers.
F. Configure EFS encryption on the new domain controllers.

Answer: D

Explanation:
To configure domain controller at each branch office to ensure that no unauthorized user should
be allowed to copy the Active Directory database from a branch office domain controller by starting
the server from an alternate startup disk, you need to use Windows BitLocker Drive Encryption
(BitLocker)
BitLocker allows you to encrypt all data stored on the Windows operating system volume and use
the security of using a Trusted Platform Module (TPM) that helps protect user data and to ensure
that a computer running Windows Vista or Server 2008 have not been tampered with while the
system was offline.
In addition, BitLocker offers the option to lock the normal startup process until the user supplies a
personal identification number (PIN) or inserts a removable USB device, such as a flash drive, that
contains a startup key. This process will ensure that users can only access all files on the servers
if they have the PIN. You cannot use an alternate startup disk to boot the server.

QUESTION 5
You work as an enterprise administrator at Certkingdom.com. The Certkingdom.com network has a domain named
Certkingdom.com that runs at the domain functional level of Windows Server 2008.
Which of the following options can be used for tracking any modification to Active Directory
Objections?

A. Configure a Group Policy to run the Security Configuration Wizard on all computers in the ABC
network.
B. Configure the Default Domain Controllers Group Policy to audit Directory Services.
C. Configure the Default Domain Group Policy to audit Directory Services.
D. Enable auditing of the ntds.dat file in the Default Domain Group Policy.
E. Enable auditing of the ntds.dat file in the Default Domain Group Policy.

Answer: B

Explanation:
To implement an audit and compliance policy and ensure that all changes made to Active
Directory objects are recorded, you need to configure a Directory Services Auditing policy in the
Default Domain Controller Policy
In Windows Server 2008, you can enable Audit Directory Service Access policy to log events in
the Security event log whenever certain operations are performed on objects stored in Active
Directory.
Enabling the global audit policy, Audit directory service access, enables all directory service policy
subcategories. You can set this global audit policy in the Default Domain Controllers Group Policy
(under Security Settings\Local Policies\Audit Policy).

QUESTION 6
You work as an enterprise administrator at Certkingdom.com. The Certkingdom.com network has a domain named
Certkingdom.com. All servers in the Certkingdom.com network run Windows Server 2003.
You want to install a read-only domain controller (RODC) without uABCrading the existing domain
controllers Windows Server 2008.
What action should you take? (Each correct option will form a part of the answer. Select TWO.)

A. Raise the forest functional level to Windows 2000.
B. Raise the forest functional level to Windows 2003.
C. Raise the forest functional level to Windows 2008.
D. Raise the domain functional level to Windows Server 2000
E. Raise the domain functional level to Windows Server 2003
F. Raise the domain functional level to Windows Server 2008

Answer: B,E

Explanation:
To create an Active Directory forest and domain functional levels to support Read-only domain
controllers (RODC) and Windows Server 2003 domain controllers, you need to create both the
forest and domain functional levels of Windows Server 2003. This is because only when you use
both the forest and domain functional levels of Windows Server 2003, you will be able to support
Read-only domain controllers (RODC) and Windows Server 2003 domain controllers.

QUESTION 7
You work as an enterprise administrator at Certkingdom.com. The Certkingdom.com network has a forest named
and Certkingdom.com that runs at the forest functional level of Windows Server 2003. Certkingdom.com has a
subsidiary company named TestLabs, Inc. The TestLabs, Inc. network has a forest named and
testlabs.com that runs at the forest functional level of Windows Server 2003. All domain controllers
on both the Certkingdom.com network and the TestLabs, Inc. network run Windows Server 2008.
Certkingdom.com users do not have access to network resources in TestLabs, Inc.
TestLabs, Inc. has a file server named TESTLABS-SR07. Certkingdom.com users must be able to access
shared folders on TESTLABS-SR07. However, Certkingdom.com users must not be able to access any
other network resources in TestLabs, Inc.
Which of the following options would you choose to accomplish this task? (Each correct option will
form a part of the answer. Select TWO.)

A. By raising the forest functional level of Certkingdom.com and testlabs.com to Windows Server 2008.
B. By raising the domain functional level of all domains in Certkingdom.com and testlabs.com to Windows
Server 2008.
C. By creating a forest trust between Certkingdom.com and testlabs.com.
D. By setting the Allowed to Authenticate for TESTLABS-SR07.
E. By setting the Allowed to Authenticate right on the computer object for the testlabs.com
infrastructure operations master object.

Answer: C,D

Explanation:
To ensure that the users in ABC-south.com are denied access to all the resources ABC-north.com
except the resources on ABC-SR07, you need to create a forest trust between ABC-south.com
and ABC-north.com so that resources can be shared between both the forests. You can however
set the trust authentication setting to selective authentication so that only selected authentication
is allowed.
Next you need to set the Allowed to Authenticate right on the computer object for ABC-SR07 so
that each user must be explicitly granted the Allowed to Authenticate permission to access
resources on ABC-SR07.
You should not set the Allowed to Authenticate right on the computer object for the ABC-north.com
infrastructure operations master object because Allowed to Authenticate right is set for the users in
a trusted Windows Server 2003 domain or forest to be able to access resources in a trusting
Windows Server 2003 domain or forest, where the trust authentication setting has been set to
selective authentication, each user must be explicitly granted the ‘Allowed to Authenticate’
permission on the security descriptor of the computer objects (resource computers) that reside in
the trusting domain or forest.

QUESTION 8
You work as an enterprise administrator at Certkingdom.com. The Certkingdom.com network has a domain named
Certkingdom.com. All servers in the Certkingdom.com network run Windows Server 2008. Certkingdom.com has its
headquarters in Chicago and branch offices in Boston. The Boston office is connected to the
Chicago by a WAN link. The Chicago office has a DNS Sever named ABC-SR04 that is configured
as a single DNS zone. The Boston office has two servers named ABC-SR07 and ABC-SR08.
ABC-SR08 hosts shared folders that are only accessed by Certkingdom.com users in the Boston office.
You work in the Chicago office while a network administrator named Rory Allen works in the
Boston office.
Certkingdom.com wants you to ensure that users at the Boston office can log on to the Certkingdom.com domain
and can connect to the shared folders on ABC-SR08 even when the WAN link is down. You must
allow Rory Allen to configure the servers in the Boston office without allowing him to modify the
Active Directory configuration.
Which actions should you take to accomplish this task? (Each correct option will form a part of the
answer. Choose THREE.)

A. By promoting ABC-SR07 to a domain controller.
B. By promoting ABC-SR07 to a read-only domain controller (RODC).
C. By installing USMT role on ABC-SR07.
D. By installing ADMT role on ABC-SR07.
E. By installing DNS role on ABC-SR07.
F. By adding Rory Allen to the Domain Admins group.
G. By creating an organizational unit (OU) for the Boston office.
H. By assigning administrative rights to Rory Allen.

Answer: B,E,H

Explanation:
To ensure that the users in the branch office are able to log on to the domain even if the WAN link
fails, you need to promote the member server to a read-only domain controller (RODC) because
the RODC works as a domain controller and allows log in to the domains except allowing
modifications and changes to the Active directory domain.
Delegating administrative rights to the local branch office administrator after promoting a member
server to a RODC will make sure that branch office administrator is not allowed to initiate any
changes to Active Directory but should be allowed to make configuration changes to the servers in
the branch office.
Configuring the DNS role to the member server, will ensure that the users are allowed to access
file shares on the local server in the absence of the WAN link. Without name resolution and the
other services that are provided by DNS servers, client access to remote host computers would be
prohibitively difficult. DNS servers need to be configured because in intranets computer users
rarely know the IP addresses of computers on their local area network (LAN).

QUESTION 9
You work as an enterprise administrator at Certkingdom.com. The Certkingdom.com network has a domain named
Certkingdom.com and a workgroup named ABCGROUP. All servers in the Certkingdom.com network run Windows
Server 2008 and all the client computers run Windows Vist
A. The Certkingdom.com network has
unmanaged network switches and has two servers named ABC-SR07 and ABC-SR08. ABC-SR07
is configured with the Active Directory Domain Services (AD DS), the Active Directory Certificate
Services (AD CS) and the Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) service while ABC-SR08
is configured with the Routing and Remote Access Service (RRAS), the Network Policy Service
(NPS) and Health Registration Authority (HRA).
You notice that the latest Microsoft updates have not been applied to all client computers that are
part of the ABCGROUP workgroup. You are concerned that Certkingdom.com users are accessing the
local area network (LAN) from these client computers.
You want to implement Network Access Protection (NAP) to secure the network by preventing
client computers that are not members of the Certkingdom.com network or do not have the latest Microsoft
updates from accessing any network servers that are members of the Certkingdom.com domain.
Which of the following option would you choose?

A. TCP/IP
B. 802.1z
C. PPTP
D. DHCP
E. L2TP
F. IPsec

Answer: F

Explanation:
To ensure that only the computers that have the latest Microsoft updates installed should be able
to connect to servers in the domain and that only the computers that are joined to the domain
should be able to connect to servers in the domain, you need to use the IPSec NAP enforcement
method. IPsec domain and server isolation methods are used to prevent unmanaged computers
from accessing network resources. This method enforces health policies when a client computer
attempts to communicate with another computer using IPsec.

QUESTION 10
You work as an enterprise administrator at Certkingdom.com. The Certkingdom.com network has a domain named
Certkingdom.com. All servers in the Certkingdom.com network run Windows Server 2008. The Certkingdom.com network
has two web servers named ABC-SR07 and ABC-SR08. Certkingdom.com wants to hosts the company's
e-commerce Web site named sales.Certkingdom.com on the two web servers. You receive instructions
from the CEO to ensure that the Web site is available even when one of the Web servers is offline.
The CEO also wants the session state of the web site to be available should one of the web
servers be offline. Additionally, you must be able to support the Web site on up to six Web servers
with each Web server having a dedicated IP address.
What action should you take?

A. Configure a two-failover cluster on ABC-SR07 and ABC-SR08.
B. Configure multiple ports for the sales.Certkingdom.com web site.
C. Configure Network Load Balancing on ABC-SR07 and ABC-SR08.
D. Configure the sales.Certkingdom.com web site on each server with the site content on a network share.
E. Configure multiple host headers for the sales.Certkingdom.com website.
F. Configure multiple IP addresses for the sales.Certkingdom.com website.

Answer: C

Explanation:
To ensure that the users of the website would be able to access the Web site if a single server
fails. The website should be scalable to as many as seven Web servers and the web servers
should be able to store session-state information for all users. It should also provide support for
multiple dedicated IP addresses for each Web server.
The Network Load Balancing (NLB) feature in Windows Server 2008 enhances the availability and
scalability of Internet server applications such as those used on Web, FTP, firewall, proxy, virtual
private network (VPN), and other mission-critical servers. NLB provides high availability of a
website by detecting and recovering from a cluster host that fails or goes offline.
You should not use failover clustering in this scenario because failover clustering requires shared
storage which is not mentioned in this question.
